Investing in Mill Efficiency

Cardell is an inclusive manufacturer that starts much of its cabinet production by cutting dimensional lumber in the rough mill located on the main San Antonio production facility. The majority of the resulting sheets of lumber are laminated and sent to the nearby flat mill, also sited on the main production facility.

In the flat mill, the sheets of lumber are cut into smaller sizes for use as cabinet panels and components utilizing cut patterns to minimize scrap waste. This process is called panel processing.

Cardell recently installed a Holzma HFL 33 angular saw in its flat mill. The HFL 33 replaces two traditional rear-load saws. It is designed specifically for high-volume production runs and contains both an independent rip-cut saw and an independent cross-cut saw. Since the saws are capable of running concurrently, the machine greatly increases production.

An intermediate table utilizing automatic material handling is located between the two saws. Working together, the table and saws can simultaneously run three different cutting patterns.

The saw also completely automates scrap removal. Because of all the integrated automation, the saw uses 30% less labor than two traditional saws while also being 100% more efficient. At full capacity, the HFL 33 can process almost 3000 sheets in one 8 hour work shift.

Cardell’s HFL 33 angular saw system was featured on the cover of FDM magazine. Read the full article at FDM Online.
